A weekend at a lake house in the Louisiana Gulf turns into a nightmare for seven vacationers as they are subjected to shark attacks. As this thing rolls along we see the deep and dark secret about how the damn sharks got there. We also see people risk life and limb to save someone’s limb, in a moment that has to be one of the more unintentionally hilarious things I’ve ever seen in a movie. But at the end of the day, at least we get to see Sara Paxton running around for most the film in a bikini. (Worth bringing up again)
Have you ever heard the phrase, “Has a million dollar body and a 2 cents brain”? That would be the perfect way to describe Shark Night 3D. The film looks great, we can’t deny that. The women in the film look great. So that and it’s PG-13 rating is here to at least be eye candy to the teen boys who might be watching and needing a hand in jumping into puberty, but the beauty of the film is only skin deep. When you get away from how great it looks you are then left with the stuff that really matters and THAT is where this movie is lacking and lacking greatly.
You see the PG-13 rating of the film works to get teens into the theater, but it just has no logic or substance. The rating stops both any chance of nudity an any shot at truly graphic gore. And that doesn’t even get us started on the story that just goes one bad direction after another. People act ignorant, people are annoying, and they do things that nobody in a situation like this would really do. Not to mention the stories’ twists are pretty dumb and uncalled for in themselves. I mean, yeah, Sara Paxton and Joel David Moore are always fun to see on screen and the highlight of this film, but they can’t even make this one “good”.
So, we get bad characters and some CGI sharks that makes you long for the days of Jaws and wonder how the movie world ever got to this point. You might at times be slightly amused by what you see on screen, but you’ll never truly enjoy what you are seeing. No good gore moments, no nudity, and as much as it might try, you never really have any fun with anything you see on screen either. When the film ends, you are more than ready for it to end. And I for one hope we never get another one of these, because it just doesn’t do anyone any favors from an entertaining standpoint.
The Conclusion
Well, nothing much to see here besides some pretty women in bikinis. But as we all know from the million films of the 80s that had hot women, you still need gore to back it up. I never got to see this in true 3D and I don’t know if even a gimmick like that would help this one much. So, don’t worry if you want to pass on this one. Nobody at all will blame you.
